Material(Optional)

45# steel (also known as C45 / S45C) is a widely used medium carbon structural steel, valued for its balanced strength, toughness, and machinability. It is ideal for shafts, gears, bolts, and medium-to-high load components in paper cutting machines and industrial equipment. It responds well to heat treatment (quenching & tempering), allowing for customized hardness and wear resistance.

Parameter Specification Notes
Common Designation C45 (ISO), 1045 (AISI), S45C (JIS) 45# steel is the Chinese standard grade
Density 7.85 g/cm³ Standard for carbon steels
Carbon Content 0.42% – 0.50% Medium carbon content (key to its mechanical properties)
Tensile Strength (σb) ≥ 600 MPa (annealed) / 650–800 MPa (quenched & tempered) Heat treatment significantly increases strength
Yield Strength (σs) ≥ 355 MPa (annealed) / 450–600 MPa (quenched & tempered) Measures resistance to permanent deformation
Elongation (δ) ≥ 16% (annealed) Indicates ductility/toughness
Reduction of Area (ψ) ≥ 40% (annealed) Measures plastic deformation capacity
Hardness (Typical) ≤ 229 HB (annealed) / 220–280 HB (quenched & tempered) / 45–55 HRC (surface hardened) Surface hardening (induction/carburizing) boosts wear resistance
Heat Treatment Options Annealing, normalizing, quenching + tempering, surface hardening Quenching & tempering is the most common process for balanced performance
Machinability Good (annealed state) Best machined before heat treatment
Weldability Fair (requires preheating/post-weld stress relief) Not recommended for critical welded joints
Key Applications Shafts, gears, pins, bolts, mechanical parts for paper cutting machines Suitable for medium-to-high load structural components

Last month, I received an inquiry from a customer who runs a small paper converting factory. He needed a machine to cut 70–120gsm A4 copy paper from large rolls, and he was very concerned about cutting accuracy and production stability.

I recommended our HONOR-1400 Rotary Knife Paper Sheeter. I told him it adopts double rotary knife design, with a max cutting width of 1400mm, cutting length ranging from 450mm to 1600mm, and the precision is ±0.2mm when the cutting length is less than 1000mm. It can handle paper thickness from 60gsm to 1000gsm, which fully meets his needs.

He had used a low-cost machine before and often encountered paper jams and unstable tolerance, so he was still worried. I sent him a detailed parameter sheet and a video of the machine running in our factory, showing how it cuts 80gsm A4 paper smoothly at a speed of 300 cuts per minute. After watching, he asked about the material of the main parts.

I explained that the core components such as the spindle and knife holder are made of 45# steel, which has high strength and good wear resistance, and some key parts are made of stainless steel to ensure long-term stable operation.

After communicating for three days, he finally placed an order. Last week, he sent me a message saying the machine arrived and was installed smoothly.

He said the HONOR-1400 sheeter runs very stably, the cutting accuracy is consistent with the parameters we provided, and there is no paper jam even after continuous operation for 8 hours. He was satisfied with the purchase and said he would introduce us to other factory owners. I felt very relieved and happy, because helping customers solve practical problems with reliable machines is what I value most.

The History of Paper Cutters

The history of paper cutters dates back to the early 19th century. In 1844, French inventor Guillaume Massiquot patented the first manual guillotine paper cutter, which relied on human power to trim paper stacks.

In 1907, German engineer Fritz Hoffmann invented the first flat-bed paper cutter, laying the foundation for industrial paper cutting. In 1877, German engineer Friedrich Kruse developed the first rotary knife paper sheeter, greatly improving cutting efficiency.

From the 1920s to the 1940s, electrification was widely applied. Electric paper cutters gradually replaced manual ones, with mechanical transmission enabling semi-automatic operation.

The 1950s–1960s saw the rise of hydraulic drive and electronic control. Hydraulic paper cutters ensured stable pressure and precision; electronic control systems realized basic programming.

The 1970s–1980s marked the digital era. Microprocessors and numerical control (NC) technology were adopted, achieving automated positioning and cutting with a precision of ±0.5mm.

Since the 2000s, paper cutters have become intelligent and servo-driven. Servo control systems (e.g., those on https://www.honor-machinery.com/) deliver high precision (±0.2mm), high speed (up to 300m/min), and stability. Modern machines feature 45# steel core components, anti-curve rack design, and multi-safety protection (infrared sensors, dual-button operation), meeting demands for high-speed and high-precision paper processing.
